My poop smelled like chocolate! How embarrassing! Especially since this occurred not in the privacy of my own home, but rather in the Navy, on board ship, in the most "public" facilities one could imagine.

How much chocolate do you think a person would have to eat at a single sitting in order to have poop smell like chocolate?

A stupid question you think? Perhaps so, but if you are eating so much chocolate that your poop smells “chocolate-ty,” then you will might as well give up on dieting.

I can speak from experience (oh boy, here we go…). After consuming a 16-ounce chocolate product before going to sleep one night, I did discover that olfactory sensation the next morning. My poop smelled like chocolate! How embarrassing! Especially since this occurred not in the privacy of my own home, but rather in the Navy, on board ship, in the most “public” facilities one could imagine. That men would notice and comment…”OKAY, who has chocolate in here?” is particularly noteworthy since they thought I was not “sharing” my treat from home.

They were correct. I had received and quickly consumed my “treat from home” before any other shipmates could demand that I share it with them. My selfishness was somewhat justified because we were out at sea for 103 days and supplies of “pogey bait” were low. The “treat from home” was received courtesy of the ship’s helicopter that made a trip over to the Aircraft Carrier to pick up our mail.

I cared not a whit about my calories or my weight back in those days. I weighed about 145, all six feet of me. We are talking 25 years ago.

Incidentally, today, June 11, is the anniversary of the date that I first joined the Navy in 1965. Wow, that was 44 years ago! I am officially an old fart who still loves chocolate.

The exercise of this "power" that humans have over animals is not really debated; it is considered "humane" to put an animal out of its misery and pain.

Euthanasia is the last resort for a pet owner and rarely is it an easy decision.

Again yesterday, we experienced that agonizing realization that there was nothing further to be done for our pet and the decision to release him from Earthly agony was one we reached reluctantly but with compassion.

Sadly, we said our good-bye’s to our black and white cat, dear “Oscar,” yesterday. He suffered an inexplicable circulation problem that resulted in poor blood flow to his hind legs, causing weakness and atrophy. That his mind was still sharp and eyes bright with life and alertness is what causes us the most pain, I think. If he were aged and his eyes were tired and dull we would simply acknowledge that he had lived a normal life span. To see him in his prime, and yet unable to move normally, was painful for us as well as for him.

The exercise of this “power” that humans have over animals is not really debated; it is considered “humane” to put an animal out of its misery and pain. When we choose to have pets in our lives we have to realize that we may be faced with the “life or death” decision, even more than once, when the pets that we love are approaching the end of their life spans.

The most difficult decision is often to choose between the cost of surgery and the “value” that we place on our love for the pet. How much is a cat worth? A rich man or woman might not hesitate to spend $1000 or more to extend a cat’s life by a couple of years, but for most of us, that would not be possible.

I realize that it is unfair to characterize animal euthanasia to be akin to “pulling the plug” on a human, but, speaking from direct personal experience, I can attest to experiencing some of the same emotional jolts to my psyche.

Farewell, Oscar, we hope that you find peace.

I have no idea why I continue to gain weight on a meatless diet. I previously discussed beer and chocolate but I adjusted for that by quitting both, at least temporarily, but the FIVE pounds I have put on just depresses me.

I know that my diet is high in carbs, but mostly from vegetables and cereals. Perhaps I need to look at this more closely. I eat mueslix, which does have quite a few calories, but hell, I have to eat SOMETHING! I don’t eat meat or eggs and I avoid dairy as much as possible.

Oh, wait, there is that Ice cream that I love, a nutty coconut flavor, and of course, rocky road ice cream. I guess ice cream has always been a favorite dessert of mine. In the Navy, I was caught with a five-GALLON container of chocolate chip ice cream tucked under my arm while I ate it with a table spoon. There isn’t much of a chance that I will let go of ice cream just to lose a couple of pounds. There are so many other things I would rather give up that ice cream will continue to be the one pleasure that I still permit myself to enjoy. I will just buy one scoop at a time, instead of a half-gallon.

I am drinking plenty of water, and avoiding soda (and now beer), but I do enjoy the tropical fruit taste of that Glucosamine supplement drink called “Joint Juice,” but it’s only 25 calories a can and just one per day. I consider this to be a “health” supplement.” Ha Ha

I have cut down on bread, now eating just one slice of sprouted-grain bread a day, but do eat some sprouted-grain tortilla shells every week. I guess I have a few more dietary changes to make.

One consideration might be my portion size. I have noticed that I eat EVERYTHING on my plate, no matter how much, and often go back for seconds. So, even though the food may be healthful, I could still be simply eating TOO MUCH of it.

Contributing to weight gain could be a lack of physical activity, but I thought I was making progress on that front too, with lots of outdoor time, landscaping, etc, that should have improved my calorie burn. Maybe just not enough. And then again, I probably work up a BIG APPETITE outside in the yard. Great. It’s a never-ending-battle.

Three weeks without meat but I am gaining weight. What is going on here?

Three weeks have passed since my resolution to eliminate meat from my diet. I was expecting it to be difficult, but so far so good.

I also expected some weight loss, which would be good for me, but so far not so good. I am two pounds heavier, and have been sitting at this higher weight for a week now.

I am trying to determine what change in my diet could account for the weight gain and have decided that it is beer.

Or chocolate.

Or both.

Frankly, I have no plans to give up either pleasure entirely, but I do know that my beer drinking has increased, right along with the outside temperatures. God, but is there anything that tastes so good as a cold beer at the end of hot day of gardening and landscape work?

But one beer a day, which is all I will admit to drinking, only adds about 700 calories a week, and that would be about a pound every five weeks. So, beer alone is not the culprit. Chocolate, on the other hand, has about 100 calories per ounce, or maybe a little more, depending on the type of chocolate. It would only take me about five minutes to eat 200 calories of chocolate. I deceive myself by purchasing bulk packages of chocolate-covered raisins and malted milk balls, and such other confections that might be labeled as “comfort food,” in very small baggies at the health-food store. Ha Ha Ha.

Trail mix is another really, really bad thing to eat if it contains chocolate and peanuts, and most of the mixes do. I once sat at the computer and consumed 2,000 calories of trail mix at one sitting, just while reading e-mail and writing in blogs. I broke that habit by NOT BUYING IT!

Perhaps I should get outside and exercise instead of sitting here at the computer. That might have some little thing to do with weight gain.

We are now eating salad every night, and I eat a lot of burritos...

It’s been a few days since my blog’s first anniversary, and I have been running ragged with springtime chores, thus no posts for the past week. That is the longest stretch without an entry since I began this blog on May 19, 2008.

As usual, summertime brings many competing activities, and time for all is simply not possible. I’m sure that most readers share that experience. So I will do my best to post frequently, but I know that the daily post will be absent for a while.

Two weeks ago I began my efforts to eliminate meat from my diet, and by way of a progress report, I can say that so far I have been successful. I do eat fish, and have found the texture of fish tacos quite satisfying. I enjoy the taste of bar-b-que sauce on baked potatoes and yams, so that substitutes for pork ribs, etc. Not really a replacement, but the taste of “hickory-smoked” bar-b-que sauce satisfies some mental memory. Wierd.

So it’s on to week number three. We are eating quite a few artichokes, and thanks to Mike Foster over at Livelife365 How to Eat an Artichoke, I have learned how to properly prepare them. His little “you tube” video is worth a visit, so I have linked to that.

We are now eating salad every night, and I eat a lot of burritos as beans do provide protein and seem satisfying since they sit pretty heavy in my stomach, like meat.

Have a great week.

There are, by some estimates, over 100 million blogs worldwide. That means NONE of us will ever see even one percent of all the blogs. We could surf the internet all day every day and barely make a dent.

Writing and Publishing a blog has become so commonplace that we hardly notice when new ones arrive on the scene and others seem to simply “disappear.”

There are, by some estimates, over 100 million blogs worldwide. That means NONE of us will ever see even one percent of all the blogs. We could surf the internet all day every day and barely make a dent. That’s overwhelming when we think about it.

I have to acknowledge that this blog, Gruggers Way, Retired and Restless, has been in existence for one year as of May 19, 2009. During that time I have posted 335 articles. There have been a lot of visitors, although only 63 the first month, 274 the second month and 588 the third month. Then….EntreCard!! August: 3,558 unique visits and 5,525 page views!

Traffic kept growing with unique visits and page views that reached what I considered to be very successful for a one-person operation. I have to credit EntreCard visitors and Google Images with building the following numbers:
MONTH/YR VISITORS / PAGE VIEWS
SEPT 2008 - - 8,048 / 14,153
OCT 2008 - - 11,455 / 25,298
NOV 2008 - - 10,787 / 32,014
DEC 2008 - - 10,543 / 25,202
JAN 2009 - - 12,361 / 24,337
FEB 2009 - - 18,860 / 34,044
MAR 2009 - - 27,751 / 51,283 (Highest monthly counts)
Then…EntreCard visits no longer count….EntreCard widget removed from site.
APR 2009 - - 14,754 / 30,015
MAY 2009 - - 2,973 / 8,155 (May 1 to May 18 at this hour)

Although I have been working hard to keep visitor interest high, the absence of Entrecard traffic is obvious.

What the future holds for Grugger’s Way is yet to be determined. This blog has outlasted thousands of others. I have kept it fairly active, although I am not able to post every day, and summer will bring competing interests.

I hope that I will be able to observe a second anniversary and post another progress report. I sincerely thank each and every blogger and blog reader who has visited this site. I thank all the “Blog-Loggers,” “Catalogers” and “Stumblers” who have helped promote Grugger’s Way during the past year.

I thank you, the reader, for your comments.

One week now, without red meat or fowl.

I used to think vegetarians were rare (no pun), but it seems that vegetarianism has existed for centuries!

(This is based on their writings.)

Often times, they use their celebrity status to promote causes, like animal rights and so on, like Pamela Sue Anderson.

Did you know that all four Beatles were vegetarian? Paul, John, George and Ringo. Incidentally, Linda McCartney, Heather Mills (McCartney), and Yoko Ono (Lennon) too.

There are a lot of musicians who list their preference as all-veggie, including Michael Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Avril Lavigne, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, K D Lang, Leona Lewis, Tommy Lee, Pink, and Seal.

Actors are prominent in their veggie-ness too, including Robert Redford, Mary Tyler Moore, Hayden Panettiere, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kate Winslet, Sandra Oh, Diane Keaton, Vanessa Williams, Lisa Kudrow, Alyssa Milano, Anne Hathaway, Bernadette Peters, Brad Pitt, Brooke Shields, Candace Bergen, Christina Applegate, Ashley Judd, Samuel L. Jackson, Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson.

Then there are those who don’t fit into any of the above categories but are prominent in the public eye, including Ariana Huffington, Ellen Degeneres, Vanna White, Deepak Chopra, the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi, and Paramahansa Yogananda.

The fact of the matter is there are hundreds of people whose names or work are familiar to you and me. They are famous for many reasons, and a vegetarian diet is just one aspect of their lives that gets attention.

I researched this in order to become more “assimilated” with the veggie diet, and feel like I am not so “out-of-the-mainstream” as I used to think. This will take some time, however, it is not automatic. I may falter, but I will not fail. My health is at stake.

I am not starving; I'm simply not feeling satisfied after ANY MEAL! I don't want to eat junk between meals, so am really trying to snack on fruit, which is mostly water and, incidentally, goes RIGHT THROUGH ME!

I wish exercise actually did “kill” appetite, but, at best, it stifles it temporarily. Perhaps the increased intake of water also fills the stomach and lessens the “eat now!” feelings.

Today, I tried exercising to reduce my hunger pangs, caused in part by a meatless diet (to which) I am striving to adhere. (English is SO FUNNY.)

I am not starving; I’m simply not feeling satisfied after ANY MEAL! I don’t want to eat junk between meals, so am really trying to snack on fruit, which is mostly water and, incidentally, goes RIGHT THROUGH ME!

I am about “fruited out” for the WEEK! My wife recommends carrots or celery. I don’t like celery, so carrots it is. I get tired of chewing carrots, and still don’t feel satisfied.

My exercise was cut shorter than the time I had planned because my heart rate hit the maximum for my age, (62), but a pulse of 158 doesn’t seem too high; I recall 185 and 195 when I was much (MUCH) younger. (The simplest formula to obtain your maximum heart rate is to subtract your age from 220.)

When I was in the Navy, I was never a really INTENSIVE exerciser like some, but I did fitness training with the special forces people in Coronado, California, that is, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams (EOD) and the SEAL teams (1,3,5). We had a great obstacle course at the Amphibious Base there, and it was put to good use by all of us who were at least moderately fanatical about fitness training.

Before I left the Navy I had run in over forty 10K races, five 13-mile half-marathons, and one 26-mile marathon. I vowed never to run another marathon. I didn’t think it was a good thing to do to my aging body, and I was 46 years old at the time.

Now, at age 62, and long retired, I have a very modest workout and very low expectations. Shame on me.

We do have half a dozen pieces of fitness equipment in our workout room, so I occupy myself with the treadmill, the reclining bicycle, and the weight bench. Oh yeah, there is a sit-up thingy down there too, an “ab-something” or other. I do yoga stretches for a few minutes each day but nothing stressful. I am getting SO LAZY.

I know that I have a pretty healthy diet, chocolate notwithstanding, but the craving for something more "substantial" than baked yams and salad is very strong.

I am weakening; I can feel it. I want to eat a chicken sandwich but I resisted the temptation while out in town today.

I truly believe that I would have eaten meat today if it were not that I see this as a challenge for me; a chance to show a little personal discipline.

I know that I have a pretty healthy diet, chocolate notwithstanding, but the craving for something more “substantial” than baked yams and salad is very strong.

Writing about this transition to a vegetarian diet is probably helping me remain steadfast in this. I might falter eventually, but I would still not consider that to be failure. There will be little ups and downs along the way, but the ultimate goal remains to live a healthier lifestyle, lose a little weight, lower my cholesterol and build up bone density. (I have osteopenia, which is thinning of the bones, and eventually leads to osteoporosis.)

So, another day down. Supper tonight is in the oven and it is a baked potato. Umm, yum.

I am notoriously guilty of snacking here at the computer. Last night, I wanted something SUBSTANTIAL, something CHEWY, or something CRUNCHY! I got nothing.

I went to bed hungry last night. Not hungry in the “World hunger” sense, but there was a nagging “emptiness” that could have been filled with a big burger.

Not eating meat shouldn’t be such a major dietary issue; millions of people around the World get NO meat in their diet. They go to sleep hungry every night. We waste more food than some entire families eat in a day.

I do know that if I keep to the “meatless” diet, I must be VERY careful to avoid filling that void with empty sugar calories or fatty (but satisfying) food that makes me feel better.

For supper last night we had artichokes, brown rice and chopped raw veggies, spinach and romaine salad. By “late” last night I would have eaten ANYTHING that was handy and available but NOTHING sounded good that I could get my hands on, except FROZEN stuff, and that would take too long. So I decided that going to sleep might be the best thing I could do.

I am notoriously guilty of snacking late at night. Last night, I wanted something SUBSTANTIAL, something CHEWY, or something CRUNCHY! I got nothing. Perhaps I will lose some weight on this meatless diet if I can stay away from snacks.

Today, (now 10:00 a.m. here) I have had a bowl of mueslix cereal with almond milk and two pears. Pears are good. Mueslix is pretty good. I am hungry. Lunch will be a green salad, chopped veggies, and organic lemon juice as a dressing. I think I will also heat up some left-over veggie soup that my wife made. It is a water-based soup, with chopped veggies of all types, and spices, but no oil.

I expect to be “famished” by supper time and we plan on baked yams and fish (tilapia), plus the requisite dinner salad which is always chopped veggies, spinach and romaine. All organic. All over-priced.

“No More Meat” is a pretty outlandish (daring) statement for a Montanan (beef ranching etc) to make, but I am convinced that meat, particularly RED meat, is going to kill me early if I keep eating it, even in small amounts.

I have been reading a LOT of material on the health benefits of meat, and, other than iron and protein, I just don’t see reasons to put my health at risk just for the flavor (which I have ALWAYS enjoyed).

While I like the taste of a rib eye steak, the smell of it cooking is almost enough to gag me. I know there is a mind-game going on here, and I don’t oppose killing animals for meat, I just don’t do it myself (any more) and I let my brain be taken over by emotion.

I’ve often said that my wife is turning me into a woman as I get older and older. I don’t talk about guns and trucks anymore, and don’t have very many “guy” friends to talk with about golf, football or fishing. Since I am retired now and the wife works full time, I do the grocery shopping, and quite a bit of the cooking. I do laundry (my OWN only), and vacuum some. I feed dogs and cats and take care of the yard. Perhaps becoming a vegetarian is the next step in my genetic transcendence.

One thing that undoubtedly influences me in my dietary choices is my spouse, of course. What we put on the table has a LOT to do with what she wants, and she is vegetarian. So, that kind of helps explain my situation.

If I end up being 90 years old, with no cancer or heart disease, I will have to give her a great deal of the credit. At that age, I will feel free to eat just about anything I want, that is, anything my old teeth could chew.

If I reach 90 years of age, I might even start smoking again.

I hate that feeling when we just “know” that something bad is about to happen.

When the “Breaking News” icon comes on the television, or my e-mail notification says something like the same thing, my stomach tightens up and I prepare for the worst.

Pretty much I have been this way since the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001. I always expect to see that someone has been seriously injured or killed or assassinated, or a bomb exploded or a kidnapping, or sniper or other horrific event.

What an awful way to live. I am fairly certain I am not alone.

I can sit here, day after day, and just wait for something to happen, or I can learn to ignore the news headlines and internet and television. That’s pretty much exactly what my wife does—and she is a lot happier than I am.

Frankly, I am tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop. It is agonizing over things that haven’t happened.

I think it was Mark Twain who remarked that he had spent so much of his life worrying about awful things…most of which never happened.

If it isn't death or dying, then it is mostly all just paperwork. We can survive paperwork.

During life’s many ups and downs I have often wondered how I would know if I ever reached that point of no return known as Rock Bottom.

Many of the events that psychologists list as life-changing are also the most stressful. I have experienced many of those events and have survived them. Not without cost. I am still alive, but marriages have faltered and failed, relationships have been strained, confidences broken, careers re-directed, families asunder. I knew I hit rock bottom when the lives of others were affected by my actions in such a way that I felt they would all be better off without me.

I recognize many of the most stressful life events are made worse by addiction and dependency. Whether it is drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or a personality disorder, these outside influences make matters worse. People will argue that “if it wasn’t for my smokes, I would never have made it through this.” I think I will give people the benefit of the doubt. If they survive, they can credit anything they want to, but usually such a dependency becomes an excuse for failing, rather than a reason for succeeding.

If you have been here near the bottom, or what you think must be rock bottom, remember that we all have the power within ourselves to reach out and get help.

Whether it is a loss by death or divorce, a drastic change in circumstances by choice or imposed by others, we learn from our experiences. By the time we reach our sixties we have undoubtedly been required to draw from strengths deep within our psyche to even reach this age. There isn’t much that can seriously disrupt our sanity any more.

If it isn’t death or dying, then it is mostly all just paperwork. We can survive paperwork.

We have a problem with neighborhood whitetail deer, known locally as “urban whitetail.” They feed on just about everything planted into the ground. Newly planted trees, left unprotected by fencing, will be nothing but a short stick by the next morning. I saw that happen to my neighbor lady, who labored for half a day to plant the thing, and lost it overnight. She never tried again. In fact, she put house up for sale and moved away, another frustrated gardener.

If I sit here at my computer by the upstairs window I can take photos of deer walking through my yard, or my neighbor’s, nearly every day of the year. They forage for food, of course, and my yard is easy pickings, normally.

Now I have begun spraying something called Liquid Fence, which is composed of putrescent egg solids and garlic, and nearly makes me vomit each time I spray it on the shrubs in front of the house. After a few hours I can no longer smell it, but evidently deer (and rabbits) can detect the odor and it repels them. Evidently. Supposedly, re-applying about once a month should keep the deer away. We will see.

One thing I DO know: Dogs LOVE the stuff! It smells like poop to them and if left available to them, they will lick it up and roll around in it. What FUN!

On TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS today, I did double-takes on old guys that I would SWEAR looked just like Stephen King.

So that we are on the same page here, I think Stephen King has a very distinctive, almost unique look about him–especially his eyes.

But, Nay, both of my look-alikes turned out to be ordinary, late-middle-age guys with a paunch, shaggy unkempt hair and glasses.

I don’t recall EVER, in my life, doing double takes on Stephen King look-a-likes, so twice in one day seems just exceptionally STRANGE.

Both of these guys were shopping for stuff, like me, and were intensely interested in what they were checking out. Perhaps it was the intensity that made me think of Stephen King. I haven’t read any of this stuff lately, just his how-to book On Writing that describes his craft and techniques.

There are other people who do resemble Stephen King, just in case you are now curious. One of these is the Author of the book, The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen, so here is a photo of him:

There is another guy who picture is out on the internet who asks if we think he looks like Stephen King. I really see a resemblance to the Stephen King of thirty years ago, but not so much any more.

So, in the end, I finished buying my broccoli and spinach and headed out to my next stop. Perhaps tomorrow will bring other illusions of familiarity.

I have really strange dreams from time to time and sometimes they even end up making sense once I wake up.

As we get older we often have that “get up now” calling in the middle of the night. When this “emergency” occurs I am often in the middle of a dream, and the dream suddenly takes on an “emergency get up now” twist.

Such was the case last night, when I found myself, in my dream, in front of a urinal and totally unable to open the front of my boxer shorts. In my dream, I was frantically pulling at the boxers, trying to get them open, but it was like there was no opening and no compromise was possible. It was sort of like giving myself a “wedgie.”

Suddenly, in my dream, I discovered that I wasn’t “wearing” my boxers, but that they were simply stuffed down the front of my jeans, neatly. In my dream, I pulled up on the underwear’s waistband and the boxers came right up and out the top of my jeans!

Then I awoke and headed for the toilet, safe and secure. What a dork.

I had a really weird dream last night. Lots of sex, over and over, like it was a competition and we had to keep score. Nothing perverted about it, just that whoever “we” were, it was a matter of having as much sex as possible and keeping track. Sort of like the story of my life. Ha Ha. Don’t believe THAT!

There was an area where we had to have this sex, and it was like a patio under the Eiffel Tower. And the patio was marked off into “spots” with painted lines like a parking lot, only the spots were for having sex, and we had to have sex in a different spot each time, trying to be the first one to have sex in all the spots.

There were also weddings in this dream, Paris weddings, with lots of “mistakes” that other people were making but I had to be the one who pointed them out. I was the perfectionist who insisted that each detail be correct. I was driving everyone crazy (in my dreams, even) with my“Type A” personality. Caterer, florist, photographer—everyone had to be corrected.

One thing about dreams is that we eventually wake up and return to reality. (Boring reality)

Sometimes, I wish dreams could go on forever, or maybe just that I could return to the same dream the next night and see how it turns out. I left some unfinished business and lots of unused “spaces.”

Much of this is just beyond our comprehension. We are totally unable to imagine an Earth without human life.

Most all of us, by now, have read about the effects of Global Warming upon the wildlife of the World. Whatever affects the Earth affects us all, human and animal kingdoms alike. What we refer to as “habitat” is also where we live. The human race doesn’t have very good prospects for continuing to exist on this planet beyond the next couple of hundred years.

The most radical of “forward-thinking” scientists think our future lies in outer space, as we have to migrate there when the Earth is no longer habitable. What a dreadful thought!! It is an unrealistic vision, as only a handful of humans would be chosen to perpetuate this life form beyond our planet. Stupid.

We are mortal, and as mortal lifeforms our existence on this planet may be limited by our ability to adapt. If we cannot find the political willpower to make necessary changes in how we live, then we will follow so many other lifeforms into extinction.

Much of this is just beyond our comprehension. We are totally unable to imagine an Earth without human life; but, in fact, human life has existed for a minuscule fraction of time in Earth’s history. We are not even an *asterisk in the Universe.

What’s my point? ENJOY EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE. ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH. ENJOY IT ALL WHILE WE CAN.

Now that the hardwood floor has been refinished in the living/dining/kitchen/bath areas, we have turned our attention to how the refinished floor compares in appearance to the base board along the wall. The existing base, now 19 years old, does not measure up very well.

That means NEW base board, (or simply base), or more specifically, wood base.

We generally prefer natural pine for base board and we have always stained it. That is what we have throughout the three levels of the house (four if we count the finished basement area).

But the 3 1/4-inch tall, (and remember, 19-year-old), stained pine wood base looks cheap and outdated when compared to the refinished hardwood floor, which just sparkles! (You may want to take a gander at yesterday’s post about the hardwood floor which includes “before” and “after” photos.)

We are seriously considering the composite base, which comes already primed, and then painting it to match the wall color. We would also move up in size from 3 1/4-inch to the 4 1/4-inch tall version. I also would like to find a product that is slightly wider at the bottom than the 5/8″ thickness of the existing base. This would cover any minor flaws in the hardwood refinish that are right in the corner or up tight against the existing base. I may have to even move up in height to a taller base in order to find the 19/32″ thickness I want.

At this point we are only considering replacing the base in the rooms that have hardwood, which means about 70 lineal feet. (There are heat registers along the walls that take up over 30 feet and then the kitchen cabinet bases occupy about 25 lineal feet.) At least that keeps the cost down.

The same 3 1/4-inch wood base currently lines all the other rooms that are carpeted, plus the basement area that is tiled. Not only would the cost go up (substantially) if we did the entire house, but the project would take us a LOT longer to complete.

I have enough “honey do” projects on my plate to keep me busy ALL SUMMER! Who says retirees just sit around and read books?

With a hardwood floor now approaching 19 years of age, much wear, about a dozen pets, many spills, scratches and accidents, we had to ask ourselves if we should just put carpet over everything and call it good.

I personally LOVE the look of a solid oak hardwood floor; it is something that can’t be duplicated by tile, carpeting or even the new laminated stuff that “looks” like hardwood.

My spouse feels the same way, and believes that wood really adds something intangible to a home’s environment, or “feel.” She likes to find nice rugs to place in strategic places to absorb the punishment of wood rocking chairs, of which we have two, and the dining table legs, and, or course, the coffee table.

So we looked at the cost of a complete refinish of the hardwood and found it to be a little over $3.00 a square foot, that is $9.00 a square yard, and probably HALF what we would spend per yard for fairly good carpet.

We hired a wood floor contractor and this is his week. After sanding, sealing, and applying a couple of coats of polyeurethane over a period of four days we have a like-new floor! We think it looks terrific and tomorrow we begin to move EVERYTHING back into the house.
Above: the New Floor. Below: the Old Floor
What an Amazing difference, huh? Wow! I can say that we are very pleased with the results. Additionally, we think that we must be helping out the economy by spending money. What a wonderful new excuse!

Anyway, I thought it would be appropriate to show “before” and “after” photos of a section of floor. Note that these are not exactly the same sections, but pretty much show the differences in general.

Autobiography of a Yogi is one of the most influential books to come out of the eastern spiritualism of India. The author, known as Paramahansa Yogananda, founded the Self Realization Fellowship organization in the United States and spent many years in the USA inspiring thousands of seekers to look within for guidance.

Another religious leader that has influenced my life is Sri Sathya Sai Baba, of Puttaparthi, India. This modern day “avatar” has established hospitals and schools, and is looked upon by his devotees as an incarnation of a fully enlightened being. Sai Baba has inspired millions and has devoted followers in ashrams around the globe. Thousands of pilgrims travel to Puttaparthi each day to simply be in his presence.

The current Tibetan Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has authored books on peace and the compassionate heart. I re-read his work frequently and greatly admire his efforts to peacefully reach an accord with China so that Tibetans can be free to live in their own country without fear of persecution or reprisal.

Mother Teresa showed the entire World that material possessions provided no satisfaction in the spiritual realm and her work amongst the poor, the diseased and the downtrodden people of Calcutta inspired the Roman Pontiff to recognize her saintliness.

To find our own path, each of us may explore history and belief systems, readings, great books, the lives of the saints, world religions, and however else we realize our true selves, which eventually we find within our own hearts and minds.

I’m not much of a fan of shifting into Daylight Saving Time and then back to Standard Time. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but I would be totally comfortable with leaving the clocks alone all year long.

The folks who live in the lower latitudes, say below 30 degrees north latitude, don’t have to experience the large swings in daylight hours that we who live here in the “great white north” experience. When we have light until nearly eleven o’clock at night, it just throws off my internal clock. I could probably get used to it over time, but just when my body cycle rhythm is adjusting, we revert to Standard Time, and the body rhythm cycle has to begin to adjust again.

Around Christmas hereabouts it starts to get dark about 4 pm. What fun. I suppose I could move somewhere else, but I don’t see the sun’s cycles as the real problem so much as the sudden change that happens when we shift an hour one way or the other.

I have always been sensitive to the time changes, and it REALLY affected me when I was in the Navy and we would cruise across the Pacific Ocean, changing time zones ONE HOUR, EVERY TWO DAYS!! After a couple of weeks I couldn’t snap out of it. I had no idea when was day and when was night, why I was eating breakfast at dinner time, and dinner in the middle of the night, at least to my body, it seemed.

Then we would arrive on the other side of the World, and there was 15 hours difference, or 9 hours difference, depending on which way you counted, and it was either tomorrow or yesterday, again depending on where your “thoughts” were located.

And, I don’t even want to think about JET LAG! When I flew from Los Angeles, California, to the Island of GUAM, total hours in the air were about 17 and I need 3 days to wake up during daylight hours.

Personally, I hope that we someday agree to just go to Daylight Saving Time and stay there all year.

Yesterday we completed one of those do-it-yourself home-improvement projects that does more to change the appearance than improve the value of a room in the house.

The master bathroom functions just fine, but after nineteen years of looking down at the same vinyl tiled floor, my wife decided ENOUGH! We need new tile!

The shopping part of the project, as always, was the worst part for me. We looked at so many different products, each one seemingly more difficult to work with and costing more and more. Ceramic tile, grout, adhesives, patterns, saws, chisels, and more hassle that I ever bargained for.

In the end, my wife discovered a product that is made of vinyl, comes in sheets that are 12 inches by 36 inches, has a base layer that overlaps each tile and contains sticky stuff that holds them in place. The finished product just lies on top of the existing tile floor–NO ADHESIVE NEEDED!! What holds the tile in place is the weight of the product itself and the fact that each 12 inch x 36 inch piece is staggered as they are laid in place, just trimming at each end, and contain a one-inch wide glue strip on two sides, that adheres to the next adjacent tile. The most difficult part of the entire project was removing the toilet and then setting it back in place.

I am going to include a couple of photos here, on the left is a thumbnail of the project in process and the other is a thumbnail of the finished project. Both of them will open up to large-sized photos.

We think the pattern and color of the new tile goes well with the paint colors and we are really happy with the project.

Happier still was I–that the cost was only $50 for 24 square feet. We ended up paying $150 for three packages and I did NOT have to buy any NEW TOOLS for tiling.

These teachers all inspired me to set and aspire to high goals, to become a more knowledgeable scholar and a better person.

Some days I really struggle with finding a topic to write about. On other days, the words just flow.

I was looking for inspiration when I thought about school teachers who had inspired me. I came up with four who played major roles in my life and career.

Bill Spahr was my high school Journalism teacher. He advised us on the school newspaper and the yearbook. He helped me learn to sell advertising for the yearbook and school paper because that was where I was needed. He taught me that there is always a contribution we can make regardless of our talents. Bill was sent home from Africa during World War II and given six months to live due to Sahara Desert sand in his lungs. He recovered and is still going strong.

Terry Radcliffe taught Speech Communication at a small private college. He helped me get a job as a disc jockey at a local radio station. Then he taught me the “art” of sportscasting “play-by-play” for basketball. I learned the importance of the rhythm of the game and the importance of the audience and I learned how to create a picture of the game in the listeners’ minds. My career in radio and television only lasted five years but always included sportscasting play-by-play, which paid extra in talent fees. That extra skill was worth extra money.

Jules Karlin taught Constitutional History and Diplomatic History at the University of Montana. His classes were small, only six to a dozen students at a time and he challenged us face to face each day. He was a taskmaster. He required us to OUTLINE our notes from the required readings each night. His handwriting was almost unreadable. He was also the volunteer tennis coach. He never drove an automobile. He only rarely rode in one. His day would begin at 4 a.m. and by noon he was done teaching classes and was off to a myriad of other activities. It was said that his recommendation could get a student into any Law School in the country.

Bill Wilmot taught Interpersonal Communications at the University of Montana. He was the most dynamic professor that I ever worked for. He wrote and published several books, some of which I still own over thirty years later. One specialty was “Dyadic Communication” and another was the art of Small Group Discussion as a way of achieving goals. I learned a great deal that I put to use for thirty years.

These teachers all inspired me to set and aspire to high goals, to become a more knowledgeable scholar and a better person. I tried teaching for one year and found that I did not have the patience. Teaching is a very difficult and valuable profession. The best teachers are also some of the best people. My world is a better place thanks to them.

Nobody has ever purchased anything after clicking on an advertisement on my blogs that would trigger a commission payment to me. I wonder how many ordinary folks make any "real" money on blogs.

Being “RETIRED” means I often find myself searching for things to do to keep myself busy, you know, to keep my mind active. That means doing something other than picking up dog poo in the yard, washing dishes, doing laundry, and vacuuming a little.

I chose “blogging” as a way to earn a few dollars from my writing. Writing novels didn’t pay. They just sit here on the hard drive. Oh, I sent one novel to my Mom and she printed it out–all 167 pages. I just don’t think it is ready for publication; perhaps I’m not really that creative when it comes to being a “novelist.”

So “blogging” it is. I have several blogs besides this one, and I write about politics, the 1960’s, photography, fitness, diet, other blogs and dogs.

At one time or another, I’ve run advertising from many of the popular sites. If you read a lot of blogs you know which sites I am speaking of. If you don’t read a lot of blogs, then–Google Adsense, Project Wonderful, CMF Ads, PepperJam, Adbrite, Text-Link-Ads, Widgetbucks, Share-a-Sale, Adgitize, and Amazon. I think that pretty much includes all that I have used. There are others. As you can see I have tried many; I have also cancelled many.

Some of these sites only pay if someone BUYS something after clicking on an advertisement. Some pay only if a someone “clicks” on an ad. Some pay just based on how many visitors to my sites see the ad. Some bloggers pay just to put a link on my site. I don’t see a lot of money from any of these. Nobody has ever purchased anything after clicking on an advertisement on my blogs that would trigger a commission payment to me. I wonder how many ordinary folks make any “real” money on blogs.

That’s why I say, “today I made another six dollars, maybe seven.” My wife just laughs at me. She asks how many HOURS I spent “working” on my blogs today in order to make the six or seven dollars. I say it comes out to maybe $1.75 per hour. “How wonderful,” she says, “you must be so excited about that.”

Ummm…so that makes me feel like an old geezer just being humored along. I think she hopes I will tire of blogging and go back to work in the real world. That doesn’t even sound like fun any more.

Quite some time ago I wrote about my efforts to find CREATIVE things to keep my mind active. Here is a post from the Archive entitled “Joys of Retirement - Creative Time.”

Now that I am “retired” I have the pleasure, or duty, of taking the pets to the vets for shots and medicines, etc.

Today, I found out I am the “Pet Spa” driver too. I remember thirty years ago that my sons needed rides to the barber and daughters needed rides to the “beauty parlor” and “nail salon.”

I think they massaged her too, and maybe a few minutes under the dryer and a quick tanning session.

By all accounts she was a perfect “dear,” a “sweetheart,” a wonderful “little girl.” Pretty much the same things I used to hear about my daughters. How times change as we age! Now we treat our dogs like children. We talk to them and scold them and try to teach them how to be upright dog citizens so we aren’t ashamed to take them out in public. That also sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

I do admit that she smelled really, really good after her bath and “do” so I told her so. She smiled and wagged her tail at me. Time to go home.

Back then we just called it “sheetrock” which is a brand name of the product manufactured by U.S. Gypsum. For all I know, forty years ago it may have been the only product on the market.

Today, my drywall work is limited to my own little projects, which included finishing off the basement about five years ago. Drywall work as a home project means I also do the taping, texturing and painting. Ummm, wait; the wife does most of the painting.

Now, at age 62, any “not for profit” drywall project is a major undertaking and I do NOT find it to be fun anymore. (I am still thinking of myself as being “retired.”)

We recently decided to improve the insulation factor of the garage since we always leave our dogs in the garage when we leave the house in winter time, even during the day. An overnight trip during winter means a really cold night for the dogs, often there is snow and LOTs of wind. A kennel in the garage confines them but provides little additional protection against the cold.

We decided the answer would be fiberglass insulation and drywall throughout the garage, with a suspended ceiling that would hold in the warmth of the daytime temperatures as well as the ambient heat from the house wall that is shared with the garage. (As an added benefit, keeping the garage warmer ought to cut down on the cost of keeping that part of the house warm.)

For me this has become a major undertaking, and I have found that cutting the drywall sheets into smaller sizes than 4′ x 8′ is necessary for the “higher up” work on the walls which are ten feet tall. I began the project during the winter months and found the going pretty slow because it was too damn cold out there most of the time. This is Montana, after all. With April and warmer temperatures I made some pretty decent progress and also feel like the pressure to get this completed is eased quite a bit. I just need to be finished before cold weather sets in, which means September here in the far white north.

I also have other priorities now that spring is here, including yard, garden, trees and trout.

My wife and her sister, both younger than I, have great fun at my expense. Like many wives and relatives, they enjoy making fun of me and my habits, idiosyncratic behaviors, and recently, my FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.

Last night they were making odd, frowny, scrunchy, toothy expressions until they got my attention. “WHO AM I?,” they asked. Of course, they were making fun of me, as I was snortling and scoffing at the dogs, the cats, the television, the Biggest Losers, the Dancing Stars, and the American Idols.

Then they told me I was a “LOMMM” or had a “LOMMM” which they explained to me while enjoying their private little gags at my expense. You see, “LOMM” stands for “Little Old Man Meany Mouth.”

Doesn’t sound familiar to me. I don’t recognize that in myself, and for the life of me, I do not know what a “meany mouth” looks like, although I sure as hell know what they are getting at with “Little old Man.” I’ve told them many times that they can make fun of me so long as they don’t use the words, “tiny,” “itty-bitty,” “small,” or “little.”

Some time ago, I wrote about humor for both men and women as we get older. There are some games we can play that may sound familiar to us all, but with a “senior” angle. Here is a link to the Archived entry on Older Folks Humor:

SIXTY degrees yesterday and again today. To me that means it is time to break out the TOYS OF SUMMER!

SIXTY degrees yesterday and again today. To me that means it is time to break out the TOYS OF SUMMER!

That means the RV needs to be uncovered, batteries installed (already recharged), drain and flush the winterized water lines, check air pressures, and set up the MOUSE TRAPS! Yes, the mice come with spring too. I would set poison on top of the tires, but our house cats go outside for a while every day and that could be a bad situation. Anyway, the mice seem to love peanut butter much more than any commercial poison feed, so the old-fashioned trap works for me.

The fishing boat too, small as it is (14 feet), needs to be uncovered and started up, the tires refilled with air, etc. It’s not much of a boat…but it doesn’t cost much to operate either.

The fishing gear will come out later this week. I always buy more stuff every summer than I use and I can’t figure out why I always seem to be missing something.

The lawn tractor needs to be started up and that is always a chore the first time in the spring. I have the battery charged up for that too, but it always needs gasoline sprayed directly into the carb before it will fire up. This was not my best purchase of a used tractor, but I saved $1000 over buying a brand new one. I have a pull-behind de-thatcher and a pull-behind rake which will be put to use in the next few days unless the rains begin. My neighbor was out with his yesterday so you know I have to keep up with him.

The garden hoses came out yesterday too. We’ve had a lot of snow this spring, but not any rainfall, so all the trees need watering to get them started.

Finally, I broke out the ANTI-DEER spray that was left over from last summer. The whitetail and mule deer number over 100 in the “neighborhood” so new shoots of shrubs and flowers will be quickly lopped off unless we take early measures to discourage late-night visits.

I hope you have terrific plans for spring and summer. I once did an article on the size of our toys, (we Boomers) and the Archive link below will take you back for a laugh or two.
