Arguably the Best Course is to Shut Up

I learned long ago that I can’t win an argument with my wife.

Even when it appears I have won, in the end, I am the biggest loser. (excuse me for that)

She probably would not agree to the terminology, but even if we call them discussions instead of arguments, she gets the better of me every single time. I don’t know if I am just not quick-witted enough (anymore?), or if she is too sharp for me.

I sometimes bring up a topic just to start a conversation (or discussion), when I already know the answer but want to give her the opportunity to be wrong. That is a “wrong” idea, of course. So wrong. Even when I am able to prove that I am “correct” she will happily point out that one person’s truth or “facts” are not always true for all people under all circumstances–and off we go again. She wins.

Occasionally she will ask me a question and I will answer knowingly, promptly and assertively. Inevitably, she says: “Do you really know that or are you guessing? Or are you making it up?

I try to act offended, but she catches me in the act. I love the give and take in our little arguments. There is more give than take, of course, and I am practicing my debate skills in front of the mirror. I want to see if there is something in my face that gives me away when I don’t know what I am talking about…..yes, sometimes I do make things up….as in: “Honey, I know for a fact that this has been proven…”

There was a time when I caught myself discussing things in the mirror. You might find that amusing or disturbing. Here is a link to that post, called “Retired Life - Talking to Myself
