What I Love About Dogs

Published by dougkueffler at 12:05 pm under Family, Humor too Edit This

Dogs have no ulterior motives, no personal agenda (other than food).

Dogs are always happy to see you. (unlike cats)

Dogs have a great sense of humor.

dalton-terrier-puppy-cheyanna-1.jpgOur new puppy, named CheyAnna, is a cross between a Dalmation and a Boston Terrier. The breeder referred to her as a “Dalton Terrier.” I was curious about the crossbreed, but there isn’t much information or photos of Dalton Terriers on the internet, and some of the photos are mine anyway. Mostly our puppy looks like a German Shorthair Pointer, only her coloring is black and white instead of the liver and white coloring of the German Shorthair.

CheyAnna is now ten months old, and 31 pounds. I believe she will still grow a little in height and I expect her to get a bit stockier in build. (CheyAnna is named after a character in one of my works-in-progress novels.)

CheyAnna likes to dig and she likes to chew; two things I would like to see her grow out of. We have found that she can destroy the “virtually indestructible” nylon bones. She can chew the edge off deck planks. She can peel the cover off a tennis ball dumbbell toy. She can tear the hell out of a bar-b-que cover. She destroyed a ten pound rubberized exterior door mat.

I am not looking forward to warmer weather when the frost comes out of the ground and she will be able to dig deeper in the yard.

I was supposed to be writing about Loving a Dog. Oh, yeah.

I love when she asks to go outside and “fakes” going potty just so she can get a doggie treat when she comes back in.

I love how she wags her entire body when she greets me, sort of like watching a fish swimming. I cringe when I hear her tail hit the cabinet or coffee table, thinking it must hurt.

I love how excited she gets for her morning walk…any walk….you just know it is the best walk ever!

I love how she runs from the front door to the back door, trying to anticipate which way my wife will enter the house. I love how she loves to greet people and still doesn’t jump all over them.

I love how she cuddles up in a comforter on my wife’s lap to watch television and nap. She is our joy.

The thumnails below will open larger photos.

Actually, it is only in the United States and through the AKC that black and white colouring is not correct.

In the UK and in Europe where the GSP was developed, black and white colouring is very much accepted and is included in the British Kennel Club standard of the German Shorthair Pointer.

I have one of the first Dalton’s that were bred in Thompson Falls. I was living in Missoula at the time and the breeder was selling the puppies at Best Buy. We saw and really liked the mother, Kylie, and to our surprise the breeder just gave her to us. She is currently around 7 years old and is just a great dog. She wasn’t socialized much being raised on a farm and still isn’t great around new dogs, but she is good with our kids and other dog, a German Shepard named Jake. I think she is close to the perfect dog with great energy, but willing to just hang out and very low maintenance. When these dogs pass away, I would seriously considering traveling back to Montana to get another…
