Just Grumpy or Mentally Ill?
Mentally ill or just grumpy? I guess relatives and acquaintances alike have been wondering about me lately.

I am pretty grumpy sometimes, and toward some people I am grumpy most of the time. This could be interpreted as anti-social, but it could be that I want some people to think I am “off” just a bit so they will leave me alone. Does that make me mentally ill?
I read somewhere that as men age their brains dry up. I guess there is less moisture available to the brain tissue. As this happens, which is supposedly a natural process during a human male’s aging process, the brain is less able to deal with emergent problems and so this is reflected as “grumpiness.” Why this would not apply equally to women is something I may have to research a little. Maybe it’s because they drink more water and less beer.
Wouldn’t it be great if drinking an extra four glasses of water every day would remedy this “grumpiness” situation? I wonder how many times my wife has told me to drink some water. She tells me this when I get overly hungry and am acting “owl-ly.” She tells me this when I complain of dry eyes. She tells me this when I mention that I am getting a headache. (Oh, if that only worked for everyone!) The odd thing about this is that it WORKS! I don’t even notice anything happening…and then, suddenly I realize that I am ALL BETTER!
Mental illness is no joke. I think we all develop neuroses and idiosyncrasies and perhaps just “old foggy-ness” as we age. Some of these just come with years of experience at life; some maybe just not able to be explained. There may be very legitimate reasons a person would be act grumpy. Some might be serious. A medical check up is in order and an interview with a psychologist or any physician who specializes in geriatric medicine is appropriate. A doctor may get to the bottom of the “attitude” problem, and everyone will benefit.
Meanwhile, I will just continue to “act” out my frustrations and never get any help. Oh…does that sound familiar?
